Third, the use of political action, if necessary with force, to push through reform against the will of 'ungodly' secular authority was not confined to radicals. It was to be taken up again by the next generation of reform inspired by Calvin. Another issue which was to divide the reformers concerned the Word and the ministry of the Word. This was also posed at the very outset, by the appearance in Wittenberg of the Zwickau prophets, men who claimed to have had a personal revelation, and to interpret the Word of God under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Many universities did experience a dramatic drop in their numbers in the years 1520-2. In 1523 the Erfurt humanist Eobanus Hessus wrote to Wittenberg complaining about this trend, requesting testimonials from Luther and Melanchthon supporting the value of university study. Both spoke out positively in favour of humanist (linguistic) studies for understanding Scripture and in 1524, perhaps influenced by Ressus' complaint, Luther addressed a tract to secular authorities, exhorting them to maintain schools.

These range from practical matters such as the reshaping of marriage laws, or the emergence of new forms of poor relief, to broad political developments such as the growth of the absolutist state, and vast generalisations about the emergence of capitalism or the development of 'secularisation' or 'modernisation'.
