Regarding observations of spontaneous interactions at home, the time of day tends to be linked to particular types of family behaviors. For example, observations during early morning periods when children are getting ready for school may elicit different types of interactions than an after-school play period or the dinner hour. Observers who schedule many sessions usually try to schedule them at different times to sample as wide a variety of behaviors as possible. Similarly, researchers using structured tasks may sample additional types of tasks, or carry out the observations in several settings (such as laboratory, home, school, or playground).

Most use one or more structure variables as a criterion for sampling. If sibling dyads are to be studied, researchers typically specify an age or age range (or school grade level) for the selection of one sibling and then select another on the basis of relative age or within a given age spacing. Gender of each sibling can also be considered in sampling or else used as a classification variables for analysis. If a target child at a given age level is selected for study, the researcher needs to decide whether to select dyads consisting of the target child and an older sibling, the target child and a younger sibling, or to include both.

One or both members of a sibling pair may be unwilling to participate, finding it threatening to reveal any information regarding themselves in relation to their sibling, feeling that such research is an invasion of their privacy, or holding antiresearch attitudes. In the case of elderly siblings, some may be too ill, frail, or immobile to participate. Even if willing to participate, scheduling problems may be insurmountable. Such problems not only limit recruiting of samples but the types of data collection and research design that can be used, particularly in longitudinal studies.
