As this would suggest, men appear to have disparate reference points, which put them in the position of having to creatively forge new rules for themselves. Without a clear sense of direction from the traditions of the past, they were in a position of sorting through the good and bad examples of fathering behavior among their contemporaries. What was missing in their lives was the father mentor who could help them read the map for how the work of fathering should be done. Like any map, however, it would appear that history quickly dates the information about the best way to reach the destination.

I'm not so concerned about my daughter liking me at this point, because I respected my father as I was growing up because dad was the authority figure. Those men who held their fathers in high regard and tried to imitate them emerged as the "negative case" (Strauss & Corbin, 1990, p. 109). The discovery of isolated segments of data that run contrary to the general trend not only serve to reinforce the predominance of that trend but reflect the expectable variation in behavior. Only rarely did the fathers in this study talk of their own fathers with a sense of contentment or pride.

I know looking back to my childhood, you know, usually the functions were very distinct. Now I find it was a little bit different, but you know, looking at my friends, their fathers went off to work from 9 to 5, got home, did this, and the mothers were there to take care of the kids. Now it's more parents both working or some working full time or part time—there's a more shared responsibility. Now whether that means getting the kids ready in the morning for preschool or putting them to bed at night, or making them dinners—I think fathers are starting to play more of a role in that and starting to play more of a role in deciding how their kids are going to be brought up instead of leaving most of that responsibility to the mother nowadays.
