A severely injured mother, for example, may be too impaired immediately after the assault to respond to the acute needs of the infant witness. Growth and developmental progress may be compromised by prolonged and severe symptoms. Young Children Traumatized children 3-5 years of age who present with avoidant symptoms such as withdrawal may become unable to embark on the road to increased independence from parents and development of social skills. The attachment to their parents may become intensified.

Diverse models of PTSD provide complementary strategies for alleviating distress that follows trauma and for interrupting maladaptive defenses against that distress, so similar strategies are applicable, regardless of therapists' theoretical position. Treatment should vary, however, with individual differences among children in the complexity of their needs.
