The polite people seem to be ignored. • We have a ‘can’t-do’ or ‘won’t-do’ culture. These statements have been taken from my experience of working with companies. Each one of them has actually been said to me at some time. 27 Don’t Feed the Ducks… Those who made these statements were displaying symptoms of a sickness. I like to call it the ‘Can’t Be Bothered Syndrome’. Characteristics of the syndrome may include: • A ‘9 to 5’ attitude • Passing the buck • Culture of complacency • Disrespect towards customers and colleagues • Lack of business focus • No real ambition, aims or values • Negative culture Do any of these seem familiar to you?

Again the message was simple. Each employee was asked to imagine their own mother or other family member or perhaps a friend needing to be on line as quickly as possible. No matter whether they were in the front line or working behind the scenes, every person in that company could have a massive influence on getting people connected quickly. The results were amazing: within three months, the organisation had moved from eleventh (second bottom) to fifth.
