3. From Line or Band Intensities to Column Densities The fundamental mechanism governing emission by cometary molecules is fluorescence excited by the Sun radiation field. In the inner coma (collisional region), collisions affect the rotational distribution of molecules. This distribution is basically out of equilibrium, between thermal and fluorescence equilibrium. To convert whole band intensities observed in the infrared, visible or ultraviolet into column densities is rather straightforward: in principle, only the band fluorescence rate (the so-called g-factor) is needed.
