The northern coast, Galicia, Asturias and Guipuzcoa, had the lowest proportion of clergy relative to population; clerics formed one per cent or less of the population. The proportion was slightly higher, up to one and a half per cent, in several of the provinces of Castile, Avila, Cuenca, Leon, Segovia, Guadalajara as well in the south-east, La Mancha, Valencia and Murcia.
Although there is little reliable evidence for estimating the size of the religious population early in the century, it appears to have remained stable between 1700 and 1800, with perhaps a slight decline at the century's close.
