Indeed it was in many ways precisely this antipathy towards Bolshevism, rather than any degree of fellow feeling, which accounted for the Labour and Soviet Russia 39 party's opposition to intervention: for intervention, it appeared, so far from undermining the Bolsheviks, might actually be strengthening them by allowing them to represent themselves as good Russian patriots rather than as the unscrupulous fanatics they really were.
