Z E N K But before we go into considerations about the mechanism of this con version we would like to give some experiments concerning the biogenesis of C 6 - C 1 alcohols. 3. B I O S Y N T H E S I S O F C e - C i ALCOHOLS Aromatic C^-Ci alcohols occur relatively frequently in higher plants (Karrer, 1958; Gildemeister, 1961). The most prominent member of this group is salicyl alcohol which occurs in the form of its (phenol) glucoside, called salicin, mainly in Salicaceae. Salicin was the first glucoside found in nature (Büchner, 1828).

It is clearly shown that the carbon atom 2 of malonic acid derives from the a-carbon of the cinnamic acid fed to the tissue; however, it should be pointed out that the absolute amount of radioactivity incorporated in the malonyl-group was very (0*01 %) low. In our opinion this could indicate that the breakdown of cinnamic acids to C 6 - C 1 compounds involves the removal of acetate or more likely acetyl-CoA from the side chain of the C 6 - C 3 acid and is consistent with the BIOSYNTHESIS OF C g - C i COMPOUNDS 57 view that cinnamic acids undergo )5-oxidation.
