Anfal, Al- (1987–1988) This is a reference to the military campaign undertaken by Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and his BaÊathist regime against the Kurdish population in 1987ă1988. Embroiled in a prolonged conflict with Iran, the Iraqi government considered the Kurds as a major domestic threat and potential fifth column for Iran because of the Kurdish demands of autonomy in northern Iraq.
