Town and Country Planning Act 1971 Permitted Development The General Development Orders specify certain classes of development for which planning permission is not required: known as ''permitted development , \ The classes change from time to time and it is essential to check the latest development orders and to consult the local planning authority if in doubt.

A change of use from one class to another, with some exceptions, requires planning permission. As an example, a building once used for light industrial purposes can be used for a different type of light industry without requiring planning permission, but not for recreation or shopping; strangely enough, if a single dwelling is to be divided into flats planning permission will be required. If the architect is not sure of the position, he should first study the current Use Classes Orders and, if the proposed building is not covered by a well-defined use class he should then consult the local planning authority.
