Memory comprises hierarchies of objects, as well as the objects' interrelationships and attributes. An inheritance mechanism determines how attributes and relationships can be transferred from classes to subclasses or instances. This language implements Sowa's conceptual graph formalisms (Sowa, 1984). Given this model of flow components, it is possible to build a model of a flow system by connecting instances of flow components. As mentioned above, this results in what in ICE terminology is called a domain model.
It was formerly implemented in ICE for doing diagnosis, prediction and explanation. As it appears below it has been generalized in order to simulate system behaviors. The algorithm begins with one sensor indication, and, using the domain model of the system, determines to which process or structure it is linked. Then, it looks at the prime model of the component being analysed, to determine parameters and causal links among signs and faults. If the sensor indication matches a fault-sign, the algorithm tracks all possible causal links in order to determine new values for related Fig.
